Amazon has announced that it will eliminate approximately 14,000 jobs from its corporate workforce as it focuses on “reducing bureaucracy, eliminating layers and transferring resources,” according to the company.

Beth Galetti, senior vice president of technology and people experience at Amazon, announced the organizational changes on Tuesday and said those affected would be informed later in the day.

“Last year, [Amazon CEO Andy Jassy] published a note about strengthening our culture and teams, explaining how we want to operate as the world’s largest startup, the importance of having the right structure to drive that level of speed and ownership, and the need to be ready to invent, collaborate, stay connected and deliver the best to customers,” Galetti said in Tuesday’s announcement.

“The reductions we share today are a continuation of this work to make us even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, eliminating layers and transferring resources to ensure we are investing in our biggest bets and in what matters most for the current and future needs of our clients,” Galetti continued.

Galetti said people affected by the reduction of an estimated 14,000 positions (about 4% of its roughly 350,000-person workforce) would be supported in the coming weeks and months.

“We are working hard to support everyone whose role is affected, including offering most employees 90 days to search for a new role internally (time will vary depending on local laws), and our recruiting teams will prioritize internal candidates to help as many people as possible find new roles within Amazon,” Galetti said.

“For our teammates who can’t find a new position at Amazon or who choose not to look for one, we will offer transition support, including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits, and more,” Galetti continued.

Amazon said they would continue to hire in “key strategic areas while finding additional locations where we can remove layers, increase ownership, and achieve efficiency gains.”

“What we need to remember is that the world is changing rapidly,” Galetti said. “We are convinced that we must organize more efficiently, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move forward as quickly as possible for our customers and businesses.”

“I don’t know of any other company with the breadth of Amazon, the number of bold and interesting bets we’re making, and all the ways we can improve and make life easier for customers around the world,” Galetti continued.
