Widespread internet outage reported as Amazon Web Services works on issue

Widespread internet outages were reported early Monday, bringing down popular services such as Snapchat, Fortnite and Roblox, while Amazon Web Services said there was an issue they were working to mitigate.

Amazon’s cloud computing company, known as AWS and which supports wide swaths of the publicly available Internet, issued early Monday a series of updates on an apparent matter.

The first message, posted at 3:11 a.m. ET, said the company was “investigating increased error rates” for its East Coast region, which it refers to as “the US-EAST-1 region.”

down detector, a place which monitors Internet services, showed around the same time an increase in Internet outages.

Outages were reported at Amazon and its Alexa assistant, along with a number of other sites. Reddit, Ring cameras, Venmo, Signal, Snapchat and others were unavailable to many, according to Downdetector.

After a series of updates on technical issues, AWS around 5:22 a.m. ET said it had applied “internal migrations” that were generating “early signs of recovery” for some services using AWS.

A few moments later, the company said it was seeing “significant” signs of recovery.

“Most requests should now be successful,” an AWS update said. “We continue to work through a backlog of applications in the queue. We will continue to provide additional information.”
